My name is Avishai Levavi and I’m a social worker in some of the group homes at Ohel Sarah.
For the last 4 months I’ve been serving as a tank commander in Gaza. While I was away, I really missed the boys I look after at Ohel Sarah. I was so happy when they sent me photos and videos and I even put their drawings up inside my tank! And I’m so grateful for the support Ohel Sarah gave my family. But all the time I worried about how the boys in my group homes were coping during the war. When I came back to Ohel Sarah, I saw how they have been affected.
Many have been traumatised by the disruption to their routines, and the sirens. Going into the bomb shelters – for real and for practice is really challenging. And I’ve seen that some kids are struggling with communication and are much more anxious.
Now I’m back home, I want to help them. A really effective way to help these children is through Hydrotherapy.
After just one session of Hydrotherapy, the children are calmer, happier and more relaxed. It helps with anxiety, as the warm water is like being wrapped in a blanket; allowing the child to feel safe and they learn how to relax themselves through breath control. We’ve identified 20 children in our group homes who would really benefit from Hydrotherapy.
A course of treatment for one child costs £1,500.
